Candidates File for Re-Election

By Sue Major Holmes
The Associated Press
SANTA FE   —   Republican Reps. Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce filed for re-election Tuesday, and Democrats also filed for both seats.
Tuesday was filing day for congressional candidates and for state Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals.
Wilson is seeking her fourth term in New Mexico's 1st Congressional District, generally in the Albuquerque area.
Three Democratic candidates and a Green Party candidate filed in the 1st District. Democrats Miles Nelson, Richard Romero and Eli Chavez filed by noon. Green Party member Abraham Gutmann also filed for the seat.
Romero, state Senate president pro tem, was beaten by Wilson in the general election of 2002. Nelson is a Santa Fe emergency room physician who has lived in Sandia Park east of Albuquerque since 1992. Chavez is a retired Drug Enforcement Administration agent.
Gutmann is a former Green Party chairman and was the party's candidate for U.S. Senate in 1996. Gutmann said that if he wins his party's nomination, he will throw his support behind the Democratic nominee.
Pearce is seeking a second term from the state's 2nd Congressional District. He won election in that generally southern New Mexico district in 2002 after 11-term Rep. Joe Skeen announced he would not seek re-election.
Jeff Steinborn of Las Cruces, a former aide to U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman and then-Rep. Bill Richardson, filed for the Democratic nomination in the 2nd Congressional District. He is the son of former Las Cruces Mayor David Steinborn.
Republican Gregory Tucker of Farmington filed for the Republican nomination in the 3rd Congressional District in northern New Mexico. That seat currently is held by Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M.
Democratic Supreme Court Justice Richard Bosson filed for retention to the court. Bosson was elected to the court in 2002 to succeed Justice Joseph Baca, who retired.
Judges in New Mexico face periodic retention elections once they have been elected in an open contest.
To be retained, a judge must get 57 percent of the vote.
Democratic Appeals Court Judge Roderick Kennedy also filed for retention. Kennedy, a Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court judge for nearly 11 years, was elected to the appellate court in 2002.
