Man Accused in Death of Border Agent Set Free in Mexico

      TUCSON — Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says officials are "shocked and appalled" that a Mexican judge has released a man imprisoned in connection with the death of a Yuma-based U.S. Border Patrol agent.
    Jesus Navarro Montes, arrested Jan. 22 in Mexico, was recently released from a Mexicali prison.
    Navarro had been sought in Mexico for allegedly smuggling migrants.
    Navarro Montes is a suspect in the murder of Border Patrol agent Luis Aguilar.
    Chertoff said in a statement released in Washington that his agency is working with "a determined Mexican government, and our Department of Justice, to seek swift justice for the Aguilar murder."
    Aguilar was run over and killed Jan. 19 in the patrol's Yuma sector while trying to deploy spike strips to stop a drug-filled vehicle in southeastern California.
