A Gift of Life
We've navigated the holidays, wallets considerably lighter. As tight as things are, though, they're tighter for the many volunteers and their agencies whose mission is to improve, or save, the lives of companion animals.   (Friday, December 26, 2008)

Vaccinate dogs for kennel cough
Q: I don't have a question, just a heads up to all dog owners who take their dogs to dog parks. Please get them vaccinated for kennel cough. I did not, and my Labrador retriever came down with kennel cough. She has been miserable for over a week, and I hope my German shepherd does not come down with it too. Once I am sure that both dogs are healthy again they will get the vaccinations so they can once again have fun in the park.   (Friday, December 26, 2008)

Bleach mix best to stop fungus
Q:I have fostered puppies and kittens for the animal shelter for six years. The last litter of kittens had ringworm. I was told to wash and bleach all their blankets, the floor, etc., which I did. Is there any spray I can use to make sure the ringworm is gone, or will it eventually dissipate over time? I have other animals and don't want them to catch this fungus.   (Friday, December 19, 2008)

Canned food best for kitty
Q: I was told to give my 3-year-old neutered male cat dry food low in ash to prevent urinary tract infections. (He's never had one, and my previous male cat never had one in his 18 years.) The one dry food that I saw that was for urinary health had more ash than the organic brands. Other brands had no labels stating how much ash they had. What, exactly, am I supposed to be looking for?   (Friday, December 12, 2008)
