Jerry Wright is the kind who will always be the same no matter what happens — upbeat, gregarious, warm. It made the Great American Steakhouse on Tramway a destination for steak and wine lovers with his excellent wine shop and tasting dinners. Now in a new space with a renewed focus on everyday dining, Jerry and his wife have opened Independence Grill to serve burgers with panache.

Busaba is her first name — when spoken it sounds soothing, yet the jury is out on whether I can do justice pronouncing her last name. She has lived in Albuquerque since 1975 but made cooking her profession in the mid-'80s. Busaba's native Thai food needed an outlet in Albuquerque, and where better to start taste buds popping than across the street from the University of New Mexico campus, in a little white building called Thai House?

Cast Iron Café is local oasis of comfort
